OCR: FIRST OBSERVATIONS THE CANALS OF MARS OBSERVATIONS OF SPACE PROBES - Narrow channels ranging in width from 25 to 50 kilometers, and having numerous branches, like mini-canyons. Small channels located in close proximity of each other and several hundred meters in width. Over 2000 of these small channels have been found; they are particularly dense in the equatorial region. - Small channels associated with centers of volcanic activity. What is the explanation for this unique terrain? Surely some kind of liquid once flowed through these many canyons, whose age is estimated at about 3.5 million years. But was this liquid water as American astronomer Carl Sagan believes? Sagan compares these channels to terrestrial wadis-dry river beds or valleys that are fed by seasonal precipitation. There may be support for this hypothesis: what appear to be dry river beds have been found in the regions of Rasena and Mare Erythaeum that seem to contain alluvial deposits. MARS BETAT
